Who are the Sharps?

The heart of my interests lies in the things I blog about most – animal rescue, food, my home, and my husband J, although he will probably prefer I not write too much about him. I’ll leave him to share with the world what he wants to.

J and I are owned by two cats, Pirate and Persephone. Pirate is too smart for his own good, and Persephone is dumb as a brick. They compliment each other well.

I am a Senior Volunteer at Abandoned Animal Rescue, a no-kill shelter in Tomball, where I work with the dogs on Saturday mornings. I’ve been volunteering there since May 2008. J and I began fostering kittens with Harris County Animal Control (not a no-kill shelter) in the fall of 2008. Between those two efforts, I get a pretty good “animal fix” and feel like I’m doing what I can to make a difference at this point in my life.

I love experimenting with new recipes and enjoying old favorites. One of my favorite stress-relievers is to bake for other people. I love watching other people enjoy my food. I also like the challenge of making nutritious and healthy meals. A big thank-you goes out to J here for being my culinary guinea pig and being willing to eat (almost) anything I put on the dinner table.

I don’t enjoy cleaning, but I do enjoy having a clean house. So I’m working on that. Fortunately I married a man who cleans, irons, and does his own laundry. God sure knew what he was doing when he put us together 🙂

I have a great job as Media Director for a church. I’m always challenged to learn more about technology and design, and how to best utilize technology and media to communicate the mission of the church and the message of Christ to others. I have been at this job since October of 2003, and though my responsibilities have changed a lot, I have been learning and growing every step of the way.

I’m excited that you’re taking this journey with me, and I look forward to sharing pieces of what I love with you. Thanks for reading!  –LA

  1. I applaud your efforts and totally agree with your cooking comments. I have just started making our own granola bars. They’re SO nutritious, economical, and delicious. I just cut a batch into big squares and put them into baggies and Jeff and I take them to work for our morning breakfast/snack. They’re full of fiber and protein and very filling! It’s a great way to have all the nutrition of a granola bar without the high fructose corn syrup in all the OTC bars. Plus, you can add your favorite fruits and nuts. I also use it as an opportunity to get more flax seed in our diet. I grind up two tablespoons and add it in – not in the original recipe and you’d never know it was there. Let me know if you’d like the recipe!

  2. I got your location from Andy..perhaps from your Mom? I’m not sure..but am very happy to find you here and share a part of your life because I love you so very much! ~smile~ And I have so enjoyed reading here this morning! I printed out one recipe to try..Pork Lo Mein. I was wondering when is J’s bday? I need to add his date to my list. GOD BLESS YOU IN ALL THINGS LEIGH ANN! XO Aunt Retha
